De Kolonie in Lommel is een nieuw werk in de publieke ruimte rijker.
Na een participatietraject met de wijk is er een briefing opgesteld voor Studio Giftig. De resultaten hiervan zijn door SAGA verwerkt in een briefing voor de kunstenaars. Studio Giftig heeft er een gelaagde beeldtaal ingebracht waarin persoonlijke verhalen, collectieve herinneringen en de bredere historische context samenkomen in één samenhangend visueel geheel.
Studio Giftig gelooft er in dat een beeld niet alle inhoudelijke elementen meteen hoeft te laten zien maar dat juist de combinatie van het herkenbare met de symbolische lagen een interessant beeld scheppen wat stof geeft voor onderlinge communicatie.

Studio Giftig is het Nederlandse kunstenaarsduo Niels van Swaenen (°1981) en Kaspar van Leek (°1983). Ze waren al apart met street art bezig voor ze in 2007 de handen in elkaar sloegen. Op dat moment was één van hen nog student aan de kunstacademie en de ander al aan de slag als grafisch vormgever. Daardoor was er enkel in de avonduren en de weekends tijd voor hun gezamenlijke projecten. Studio Giftig heeft een heel eigen beeldtaal ontwikkeld, gekenmerkt door gedetailleerde taferelen die tegelijk fotorealistisch én surrealistisch zijn. Hun unieke mengeling van herkenbaarheid en vervreemding is al vergeleken met de stijl van de Britse kunstenaar Damien Hirst.

Following a participatory process involving the local community, a brief was drawn up for Studio Giftig. SAGA incorporated the results of this into a brief for the artists. Studio Giftig has introduced a multi-layered visual language in which personal stories, collective memories and the broader historical context come together to form a single coherent visual whole.

Studio Giftig believes that an image does not need to reveal all its substantive elements immediately; rather, it is the combination of the recognisable with the symbolic layers that creates an interesting image, providing material for mutual communication.

About Studio Giftig:
Studio Giftig is the Dutch artist duo Niels van Swaenen (b. 1981) and Kaspar van Leek (b. 1983). They were already working separately on street art before joining forces in 2007. At that time, one of them was still a student at art school and the other was already working as a graphic designer. As a result, they only had time for their joint projects in the evenings and at weekends. Studio Giftig has developed a visual language all of its own, characterised by detailed scenes that are both photorealistic and surrealistic. Their unique blend of recognisability and alienation has already been compared to the style of the British artist Damien Hirst.
